Resources for new mothers and families

Congratulations on your pregnancy. The birth of your child is one of the greatest moments in life. We look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Skagit Valley Hospital’s Family Birth Center provides a family-centered approach to the childbirth experience that involves interested family members in all stages of prenatal care and childbirth. We conduct regular evaluations of our birthing facilities to ensure that patients enjoy modern, comfortable rooms. Mother and child share a room, and the same skilled nurse is assigned to both, providing convenient, well-rounded and attentive care.

Last year, our Family Birth Center helped welcome more than 1,200 babies.

With so many new moms and dads turning to us for their special delivery, it's no wonder that our Family Birth Center is Skagit Valley's home-away-from-home for complete childbirth care.

We also offer online pre-registration for patients planning to deliver their babies at our Family Birth Center. Please click here for more information about pre-registration.

Our comprehensive services include:

  • Childbirth education
  • Advanced labor, delivery and postpartum facilities
  • Follow-up services to assist you in newborn care at home

At the Family Birth Center you'll receive the area's best childbirth care close to home, including 21 private labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum rooms (LDRP rooms), which foster a calm, relaxing and healing environment for your delivery and recovery. Our LDRP rooms include the following amenities: specially designed beds for delivery, resting and sleeping; a flat screen TV and DVD player; and a private bathroom with a jacuzzi tub to relax in during labor.

You can trust your care to our highly experienced nurses. Their goal is to help make your childbirth experience the best it can be, and ultimately send you home with a healthy baby. Skagit Valley Hospital's commitment to compassionate, thorough obstetric care allows women to relax and focus on their new or growing family's well-being as well as their own.

Parents may also choose to have their baby's photo placed in our online Web nursery. Ask your caregiver for more information.

Labor and Delivery

At last you've made it to the final stretch of your pregnancy: labor and delivery. At Skagit Valley Hospital’s Family Birth Center, a compassionate childbirth team is ready to assist you and your support person through each step of the delivery process. Our experienced, compassionate nurses are part of an expert staff of caregivers, well trained to care for mom and baby.

Our team includes: obstetricians/gynecologists, midwives, anesthetists, pediatricians and family practice physicians. Epidural anesthesia services are available 24-hours a day.

During your stay at our Family Birth Center, your baby's safety is top priority. First, all Family Birth Center staff members wear easily recognizable photo identification badges. We also make sure that your baby remains in your direct care throughout your hospital stay. To further ensure your baby's safety, each baby is monitored through an electronic device called the Hugs System. We also carefully monitor each person coming and going from the Family Birth Center.

If you require a cesarean section, we have two operating rooms right in the birth center. We are backed by the most up-to-date technology and services available in our area.

Should your infant require emergency care, our specialized neonatal intensive care team is available around the clock to quickly transport babies to a nearby neonatal intensive care unit.

Our staff is trained to help families through a difficult time such as with a miscarriage, stillbirth or a newborn death. Our nurses, social workers and chaplains can help coordinate details and provide you with resources to ease you through your loss.

New Mothers and Families

Now that you have a newborn to cradle in your arms, it's time to leave the Family Birth Center staff behind and venture home on your own to begin caring for your baby. But even when you go home, our care for you and your child continues.

Before discharge, as an extension of the warm, caring atmosphere of Skagit Valley Hospital's Family Birth Center, each newborn receives a baby gift: a tiny hand-knit hat, lovingly made by our hospital volunteers. After all, the birth of your child is just the beginning of a lifetime of well-baby and well-child health care delivered right here by your neighbors at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Our goal is to equip each mom with the knowledge and skills to be the best mother she can be. We encourage new moms and their support person to utilize the following services in the weeks and months that follow delivery:
